ACCIDENT TO CAPTAIN HAULTAIN.

A Threo Hours Swim Off Whangarel.

Captain Haultain, of the ketch Reliance, writing to a friend in Auckland under date of September 11, says:— We left Thames for Whangarei on Monday forenoon. On Tuosday morning just outside of Whangarei Heads, when jibing, I was knocked overboard. I swam round for about half an hour, cooeing in hope that thoy (the crew) would pick mo up, but seeing no signs of the boat, I stripped all my clothes off and started for tho beach, about three miles off. I saw a light on the beach, which I swam for, and as soon as it was daylight I saw that, it was the Reliance. I managed to get on the beach, very nearly dead. I had to be oarried on board. Was very bad all yesterday and could not move, but am rather better now. I was 3J hours swimming with a heavy sea on. The men on tho kotch state that whon I was knocked overboard they rounded tho vessel to put the boat out, and pulled round for two hours looking for me, without success. They got among the breakors, when the boat filled, but they managed to get her on the beach; the ketch also went ashore on the beach. Sho Is now lying about two miles from Monro's Point. I do not think she will float until spring tide.
