Another Account of the Ocourrence.

(FROM OUR OWH CORRESPONDENT).

HAMILTON, this day,

Barlow had been in Alexandra since Saturday looking after the horses left behind when he captured Winiata. Having secured them, he spent yesterday in company with Tv Tawhiao,]|intendingjto start for Auckland early to-day. Whilst liriuking with tne natives before separating one native proposed tho tonst "Ketaori Winiata. This put Barlow on the gxii vive. Shortly afterwards he went with Tv Tawhiao to get the horses out of tho stable, While opening the door twd shots were iired at him. One struck him on the breast and passed through his coat and waistcoat. Barlow drew a revolver and fired 10 shots at the retreating nativp, nheu Tv Tawhiao cried—"l am shot." Barlow fearing he bad killed Tv Tawhiao, desisted from following the native, who thus escaped. Capt. Gascovne immediately turned out the Constabulary to tcour the country, and deemed it prudent to send Barlow underoacort on to Hamilton, where he arrived at 4 o'clock this morning, and proceeded to Auckland by train. The search for the would-be assassin is as yet unsuccessful.

CAMBRIDGE, this day.

The Opinion in Cambridge.

News has been received here of the attempt on Barlow's life at Alexandra last night. It is said, on his arrival there from auckland, the matter was communicated to Winiata's friends in the King Country, and on going to the stable at Finch's Hotel last night for horses, in company with To Tawniao, two shots were fired at him. Tne general opinion of people here is that the matter was preconcerted by way of attaining notoriety, which may make Barlow a good mark for some Auckland show* man. In facf, the story is universally disci edited.

Whatiwhatihoe {Near Alexandra) This day.

opinion in Alexandra,

You will doubtless, through your Hamilton correspondent, have received particulars of a reported attempt to murder Barlow, Winiata's captnrer. JI say " reported " advisedly, as one of Barlow's companions and others distinctly deny that any shots were fired except by Larlow himself.' This settlement is all in excitement to-day on the matter. Tawhiso is absent at Kawhia. The natives say that Barlow's coat was singed, wbich could not have been tbe case had the shot been fired from the spot some 20 yards distant, where the assassin is alleged to have been planted. It was a great mistake, Barlow visiting this place so soon after the execution of "Winiata, and will cause immense trouble. I would suggest to the authorities tosendUheir most experienced detective here immediately. The course of the bullet has been traced, but not found. It is said that Barlow was warned of the daDger here, and be should have immediately gone away or kept inside ths hotel. He appears to have trusced to the presence of the King's son, Tv Tawhioo, tor his safety, which he should have known was useless, Reports are so conilicting that a good man .should be sent at once.

MERCER, this day.

Barlow is in the train on hia way to Auckland. He was shot at twice last night. His coat is cut.
