ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION AT ALEXANDRA.

A NARROW ESCAPE.
Intense excitement was caused in town this morning by the receipt of intelligence from Alexandia that an attempt had been made on the life of Bailow, who captured Winiata, and whose life has been threatened by the relatives of the perpetrator of the Epsom murder. Barlow, it would appeal-, proceeded from Auckland to Waikato on business, and, despite the threats of the natives, ho has been hobnohbing with the King's son, Tv Tawhiao, and other, leading Kingitea. The following telegram, ', received at 9 a.m. this morning by Mr Superintendent Thomson, from Sergeant AlcGovern, of Hamilton, was the FIRST DESPAICH, giving particulars of the atteinptedjjassasinatiou, to arrive in town :— "An attempt on Barlow's life was made by a native at Alexandra last night. Barlow arrived here at 4 this morning, having been escorted from Alexandra by the constabulary. It seems that Barlow came to Alexandra last Saturday to look after some horses. About 10 o'clock last night, iiarlow, in company with Tv Tawhiao, went to the hotel stables to assist Tv Tawhiao to get bis horse. As Barlow opened the stable door two shots were lired at him, one of which struck him across the breast, passing through the vest and coat. Barlow saw a native running away, and fired at him, hut the shot took no effect. The constabulary searched for the offender, but without aucccas. - FKANCIS MeGovern, Sergeant."
