TIMARU, Saturday. The old Custom-house was sold by auction to-day for £40. MISSING SCHOONER. The schooner Young Dick, is now 42 days out from this port to Sydney, and some anxiety is felt respecting her. She has five passengers on board, and is locally owned. DUNEDIN, Saturday. The Kaitangata Relief Committee has received from the General Post-office Department a contribution of £288. The Dunedin Gaol now contains 120 inmates, viz., 99 males, and 27 females. YOUNG THIEVES. Three youngsters were convicted at the Police Court of stealing ducks. They were each sentenced to six hours' imprisonment, and a dozen stripes with a birch rod. DRAWN ROUND A SHAFT. An inquest was held at the Hospital to-day ou the body of the boy Fox, who was fatally injured at Gibbs and Clayton's Saw-mills on Thursday. J. McCormick, . engine-driver, deposed to a boy having rushed to his room and informed him that a lad was caught in the shaft. He at once stopped the engine. Henry Payne, aged 14, saw the deceased hanging with his hands to the shaft, holding something round. In an instant deceased was caught and whirled rouud striking the joists with his feet. J. McCormick said deceased had wanted him to come and see the fun. Then be placed a bag of sawdust on the shaft, on which it twisted and »vas thrown off, striking any person who stood near. He had only discovered the trick that day, and had been experimenting several times. Dr Roberts described the injuries inflicted on the deceased, which were of a horrible nature. Mr Gibbs stated that the room in which the deceased was injured was partly uuder ground. Neither he nor any other boys had any business there at the time this occurred. The corner said the accident was clearly the result of the deceased's own carelessness or play, and that the officials were not to blame. The jury returned a verdict that deceased's death was caused by his own carelessness. THE NEW MEMBER. Mr Ponnld Stewart, our new member, leaves for Wellington on Tuesday. He had intended to go by the Wanaka, but that boat did not connect at Christchureh with the express. The weather here has been very bad, storms of snow and hail alternating. THREATENED LIBEL. On dit that Mr Proudioot, who figured recently as prosecutor in a case against Constable lefrell for assault, intends entering an action for libel against one of our evening papers for its comments on the case. MELANCHOLY DEATH. Capt. A. McKinnon, an old resident of Port Chalmers, was found dead this morning in the grouuds attached to his residence. When returning home last night he must have fallen and stunned himself, and, owing to the coldness of tho night, perished where he tell. MISCELLANEOUS Mr Andrew Todd, of Taicri, one of tho oldest and most respected residents of the Plain, died this morning. It is intended to work the Princes-street Tramway with horses until a more powerful engine arrives. Preliminary trials were made to-day, but tho horses were not broken in. The Cromwell Company have sent down a cake of 624 ozs. 1 dwt., being the result of the usual four-weekly crushing from 452 tons of stone. From tho beginning of the year to date the mine has yielded 4,710 ozs. from 3,103 tons of stone. Signor Morlcy will produce an amateur opera next week at the Queen's Theatre. Thirty-six applications were sent in to Caversham Borough Council for the office of Town Clerk, at a salary of £100 per annum. The Taiera Derby ploughing match at Mosgiel to-day was very successful. ' There were 27 entries. Bradley's hounds had the most successful ruu at Mosgiel to-day. The Owhira bridge, destroyed by the late flood will be re-built by the Taicri County Council. . In the Supreme Court to-day, the case of Benjamin Jeffrey, v. J. B. Lucks was heard. This case was an action to recover a sum of £700 for damage aud trespass, brought under three counts. Under the first count, defendant was charged with trespassing on land leased and held by the plaintiff. The 2nd count charged him with he conversion of certain fruit goods. The 3rd count with having made distraint for rent, and retaining possession of goods distrained upon after tender of the amount due for rent and expenses. The jury answered issues in favor of plaintiff assessing damages at £150. ALLEGED FORGERY IN VICTORIA. The police at Miller's Flat have arrested a man named Kenneth Macrae on a charge of forging a bill of exchauge for £256 in Victoria.
