WELLINGTON.

(From our own Correspondent.) v This day.

Election Work. Party feeling is beginning to be very strong in reference to the next week's eleceion. Mr Gisborne's retirement makes the course much easier for Mr Travers, who will split votes with both old members, and consequently stands a good chance, especially as the Roman Catholic party will give him a block vote under the mistaken, impression that ue i B secretly in favour of denominational education. He announces his intention to-day of sticking h^rd to the last, and will address another meeting to-night. Messrs Peace and Hunter hold open-air meetings next Wednesday. They have a very strong committee working hard. > _. ' Opposition to Mr. Fitzherbert at the Untt is announced to-day, but not authenticated. Messrs Brandon, Gillon, and Wallace are working desperately hard in Wellington 4 country districts. Mr. Brandon is generally considered likely to be returned. Messrs i Bunny and Andrew are almost certain to De re-elected for Wairarapa. Cook's Straits Cable. It is feared that the injury to Ooofes Straits cable is very serious, and as the locality is the deepest hole in the strait [VI fathoms), repair will be a work of much difficulty. It probably will be Borne weeks before the cable is again in working order, if indeed repairs can be effected at all. The steamer Tui is conveying telegrams between Wellington and Wairau, but it is thought she cannot make mora than three trips in two days on an average.
