AKAROA FISHING BOAT SUNK

Mr John brassel Killed

News was received last evening that Mr Jolm (Jim) Brassel was killed at Lyttelton Heads last evening. The "Dolphin" owned by Mr Brassel, was approaching the heads when he was signalled to stop, according to the account given. The boat proceeded and the shore battery, in an attempt to fire a shot across the "Dolphin's" bows accidently hit the craft and sank her, killing Mr Brassel. The deckhand, Mr Wilman, was saved and it was reported from Lyttelton last night that an attempt wouid be made to raise the "Dolphin" today. The news came as a shock to Akaroa people last night, where Mr Brassel senr., is wellknown as he has been engaged in fishing from Akaroa harbour for many years past. The late Mr Brassel leaves a wife, two sons and two daughters. Mr Geo- Brissel, one of his sons, left Akaroa in the "Pioneer" for Lyttelton yesterday and Mr Jack Pool accompanied him. Mr Geo Brassel is the well-known Sander's cup skipper. Mrs Brassel senr., lives in Christchurch. Mr Bressel was 51 years old.
