ANNUAL KAIK RELAY

AKAROA SCHOOr PUPILS RUN KEEN RACE Allen Stokftß Wins "Omako" Cup The annual school Relay Race between the Kaik and Akaroa was run yesterday when twenty-five pupils of the Akaroa District High School competed for Mr E. X. Le Lievre's handsome silver cup presented for this race about five years ago.

The winner of the race was Allan Stokes (li minutes) who wins it for the second time, having won the race also in 1937. He also secured second fastest time, Leigh Langi'ope beating his time by a second. Stokes did the journey in 19 mins. 25 sees, and Leigh Langrope in 19 mins. 24 sees. Langrope's time is the second fastest since the race started, Raoul Le Lievre, who won the cup when it was competed for the first time and ran the distance in 18min 55secs. The placings were as follows:— Allan Stokes (li mins) .. 1 Keith Munro (li mins) .. 2 William Barrett (4i mins) .. 3 Arthur Timothy (5 mins) .. 4 Ivan Narbey. Stewait Erickson, Leigh Langr pe and Rodney Weir were the nexi to finish in order. Fastest Times The four fastest times were registered as follows :— Leight Langrope . . 19m 24s Allan Stokes .. .. U?m 25s Keith Mui.ro . . .. 19m 30s Stewart Erickson . . 20m 6s Allan Stokes besides winning the cup also wins the miniature presented by Mr A. M. Helps, and a first prize certificate fiom the Akaroa Recreation and Physical Welfare committee. Keith Munro won 2s 6d order and a second prize certificate. Leigh Langrope won a first class certificate and 6s order for recording fastest time and as no competitor could win two prizes Stewart Erickson won 2s 6d order and a second prize certificate. A feature of the race was the very close finish and the number of competitors who completed the distance. Erickson .. .. 2 40 6 L. Langrope .. .. 2 40 24 The headmaster, Mr W. H. Jackson, and Mr C. B. Arnold secondary Department ass'btant, made the arrangements for the race. Mr F. C. Newton acted as* starter, Mr L. J. Vangioni as timekeeper, Mr C. B. Arnold and W. Jacobson as judges, while Dr. W. J. Eldginton and Messrs W. A. Newton, P. G. Riches, F. C. [ Newton and W. H. Jackson took the j runners to the starting point. I At the conclusion of the race the I "Oinako" cup was presented to Allan Stokes by Mr E. X. Le Lievre and three cheers were given for the winner. Mr W. Jacobson, who apologised for the absence of the chairman of the school committee, Mr F. G. Armstrong in asking Mr Le Lievre to present the cup, said they all appreciated Mr Le Lievre's continued interest in this annual contest anc 1 he thanked Mr Helps for presenting the miniature cup and those who had given donations;

Mr Le Lievre congratulated the boys upon the splendid race they had run and the handicapper for the close finish they had provided. He hoped the boys who were not placed would .try all the harder next year.

Three cheers were given for Mr Le Lievre, the donor of the cup.

Mr F. Davis, Mayor of Akaroa, presented the other prizes and said the competitors had shown their keenness to become physically fit and they had done a lot of training for the race. He also congratulated the promoters of the race upon the success of the annual fixture.

Mr W. H. Jackson thanked all the officials for their assistance in carrying the race to such a successful conclusion.
