PROVINCIAL PATRIOTIC MEETING
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE FORMED At a meeting of local authorities held in Christchurch on Wednesday, an executive committee was formed to control the raising of funds for patriotic funds as follows :— The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.), Messrs J. S. Barnett (Christchurch), W. S. MacGibbon (Canterbury Chamber of Commerce), F. E. Sutton (Lyttelton), E. L. Smith (New Brighton), G. Tyler (Rangiora), W. H. A. Vickery (Kaiapoi), F. L. Scott (Waimairi), F. George (Riccarton), R. T. McMillan (Ellesmere), H. J. Crothers (Ashburton), F. R. E. Davis (Akaroa). The executive, meeting later, passed a resolution that all local authorities should be written to in the Canterbury Provincial District, urging on them the necessity for setting up patriotic organisations to collect funds for patriotic purposes as provided in the regulations. It was also decided to urge local authorities themselves to make contributions to the funds. Power to make them, it was explained is given in the regulations. Centenary Celebrations The meeting aiso discussed the holding of the centenary celebrations in 1 1 j40 on a reduced scale. i |
