The annual athletio sports were held on Monday and were more successful than any tha 1 . have been held in Akaroa for years pjst. The arrangements were excellent, the entries good, the course iv excellent order- aud the weather beautiful. There was a very large attendance from the Bays and Akaroa did good business. Mr Hammond had a booth on the ground, and his customers were aumerous ; but the absence of a band was much regretted. Mr G. Armstrong, the Hon Sec, worked very hard to secure the success that was attained, and was ably helped by Messrs E. E. Lelievre, Robinson, Checkley. Ingram, Bruce, Leete, T. Peulington, Piper and others. Au attempt was made to clear spectators from the side of the course nearest the railings, in order, that the ladies on the seal Band standi' g ou'si-le on the o?plult might see something of the contests, but tho atterrp-j was an utter failure, thanks to the irresponj sible friends ofj the competitors, and the sycamore cages that helped to block the men. These cages, however, formed excellent points of vantage for the small boy. Those with toes email enough clambered gaily up the wire netting, and the bigger ones utilised the secretary's chair and anythiug else that came handy to aid them in their ambitious efforts.

The racing was good, the hero of the day being Mr A. Mason, of Okaios, who was first in the 100 yds, and also in the 120 yds, 220 yds and 440 yds of the Grand Handicap, thus making 12 points in all, and winning the s.lvor medal, given for that, and also the Grand H.udicap nndai and prize. T. Masefield, who also ran with great pluck and steadiness throughout, ran four seconds to A. Mason's four firsts, thus scorirg eight points. As he had to give Mason 7yds in the 120, 6yds in the 220 and 15yds ie the 440, this was an exceptionally good perform ance. D Bnrwick won the mile and half mile in g< oil fclyle, George Whelch running second in both events, showiug real good pluck right up to the tape. The cup, a very h.ndio-r.e one, pirlly presented by Mes^r-Joins and Sons, jowelltr.% of High Street, Chris.church, deservedly fell to I). Barwick for the mile. We regret that a protest was lodged ngiinst A. Masrn, on the ground that 1 c had rot given a I st r f hi. pi vious per foimnnce. in sending in hn entry As lie Jit! write cf hia per form.uccs at Ok aril's Sportc. the fither day, aud as that is the only c. cation on which ho has run a* all for right years, the protest seems to ua one ti at the Commit'ee could have decided at once ; but, as it wan, the consideration was postponed, aud as acoterquer.ee Ma.on could rob be presented with his medalt< at the cgi cert on Monday night. As wa 1 tho case las. year Okain's carried off Ihe chief hououi. of the day, witning the Gr»nd Handicap, 100 yds (men and boy?), sc) rol boys' rely race, long jump, hop step hnd jump and tug 01-war. The 100 yds waß done in the be.t time evtr run on the Recreation Ground, 10 2 sths sec, and the half mile, Zmin i6*ccs, rrompared favourably with 2min. 44 »cs. of l»st year. The mile, however, was not dorre in Birch good time as it has been in other years : but Barwick was never pushed to his utmost.
