July 5. Notice of motion was given by Mr Ballanoe expressing the disapproval of the House of the introduction of Kanaka labour into Australia, and by Mr Reoves " That there bo eraeod from the journals of the House the motions of censure passed from time to time ou the following gentlemen, none of whom hold peats in the House at the present time :—Messrs Curtip, Pyke, Onnond, Gisborne, Sir J. Vogel, and Mr Bryce." Mr Fieher spoke in strong terms of Mr W. P. On the motion for the committal of the Electoral Bill a long debate arose on the Women's Franchise Clauses. Eventually tho motion was agreed to. Messrs Wright and narkness hove been re-appointed Opposition Whips for tho seeßion, and Messrs Hall-Jones and W. C. Smith Government Whipa. July 6. In reply to a question, the Hon. Mr Cadman stated Government did not intend to bring in a Bill to abolish capital punishment this session. The following bills were introduced :— Local Authorities Accounts nad Audit Bill, Property Law Consolidation Act Amendment Bill, a Bill for farther Amending the Public Works Act, Companies Branch Registers Act Amendment Bill, Employers' Liability Act Amendment Bill, Workmen's Lien Bill, Hawkers and Pedlars' Bill.

Mr Mackenzie (Clutha) moved—• " That it is desirable that the Stock Tax be abolished," Hβ said he moved the motion, although he did not expect to carry it, as the Government, which possessed a voting majority in the House, was going to oppose it. Farmers, however, felt this tax to be exceedingly unjust, and it had a demoralising effect upon them. Motion lost by 42 to 14. Mr R. Reeves (Inangahua) moved— " That in the opinion of the House it is necessary, in the interest of the coalmining industry of the Colony, that an import duty should be placed on all coal imported into New Zealand, and that a respectful address be presented to his Excellency embodying the above." Debate interrupted by adjournment. The Printers and Newspapers Registration aud Offensive Publication Bills passed their second readings. The second reading of Sir John Hall's I Women's Suffrage Bill was postponed for a fortnight The Auckland University College Land Exchange Bill, Ohinemuri County Ridings Validation Bill and Napier Native Hostelry Site Sale Bill was read a second time.
