FRUITLANDS NOTES.

We were favoured with a fine night for the Welcome-Home Social, which took place in the school on Friday last. There was quite a large gathering ineluding representatives from Clyde, Alexandra, and Roxburgh. The function took the form of vocal and musical items, interspersed with danciug. After virions items, the presentation of medals took place. Mr Symes who acted as chairman, addressed the audience, and explained the honour that was du& to the boys for the noble work they had done in fighting for their country. He then introduced Mr W. Black, Mayor of Alexandra to make the presentation. After a few remarks, the Mayor called on Mrs Dougherty to pin the* medals on the four boys present to receive : —Private J.J A. Dougherty, Private W. M'Neish. Rifleman A. M'Donnell and J. Mitchell. There were two other boys not present, but their medals will be sent to them — Private J. Lythgoe who is in Dunedinand Private J.Brown, who is taking his holiday leave. Three medals suitably inscribed—ln memory of three deceased soldier* : Private K. M*DonnelL killed in action 22/8/18; Private J. Galvin, killed in action 18/9/16: and Rifleman Ji J. Botler, who was killed 31/10/ IS. Tha medals will be sent to their next-of-kin.

Private James D>ugherty on behalf of bis comrades thanked the people present for the pleasant evening that was accorded to them.

Daring the evening supper was served round. Mr J. Ilarley ami Miss Grant ably supplied the dance music. The comioittee thank Mr George Hri-*un for the use of his piano on which the sneces* of the evening depended.
