Cromwell Letter.

(Own Correspondent). The members of the Otago Land Board paid a prolonged visit to these parts last week, and made a final inspection of the Kawarau and Morven Hill runs, which are to be subdivided early io the new year. Survey parties have been busy on the runs for some months, but their work is nearing completion, after which the sale plans will be available at an early date Several important matters were brought before the Board by a deputation from the settlers' delegates and much valuable information obtained in regard to the mode of procedure for applicants. The settlers' delegates forcibly impressed on the Board the necessity for holding two ballots, as such a large number of blocks are to be submitted, and by this means unsuccessful but highly desirable applicants from the first ballot would have the second opportunity. The suggestion is indeed a good one, of which the Board approves, provided the Lands Department is agreeable, and it would amply warrant the increased expense. The Alexandra Dramatic Club, although not greeted with a packed house on Saturday evening, won nothing but expressions of delight from those who witnessed their staging of " Facing the Music," and it was voted as one of the best entertainments of the kind ever produced in the local hall. The j members carried out theit'parts in ' a proficient manner, and without distracting one iota from the remainder of the performers, the acting of Mesdames Arthur and M'Kellar and Messrs Dumsday and Arthur is worthy of special mention. At a general meeting of the Cromwell Rifles on Wednesday last Lieut. Jolly was elected captain and Sergt. D. Cahill junior subaltern. Both appointments are most popular, and at present the corps is making steady progress. The dredging returns for the past week were very poor ; Rising Sun, with 65 ozs, being the only one of note. Shine lis laid up, having a broken crown whjel, while No. II ground is very patchy.—Several private companies are also at a low ebb.—At the time of writing the Electrics are also idle, and the future prospects of this once fa.nous company are anything but promising.
