The Magistracy.
FAREWELL TO MR BARTHOLOMEW,
At the conclusion of the Court sitting at Naseby last week members of the Bir practising in that district referred to tbe transfer of Mr J. Li. Bartholomew, S.M., and accorded him a pletsant valedictory. Mr M'Neil said that as this wis the list time His Worship would preside in Naseby, ho took tbe opportunity of expressing his good wishes. Diiriug the six or sevou mouths in which His , Worship had acted in this district he felt that in tho conduct of his cases he was greatly indebted for the help that had been extendod to him. The Bar had had tho greatest confidence in his rulings, and be had had the ontire confidence of the inhabitants. They were very sorry he was going from Central Otago, but they understood he was going to a more congenial climate. He hoped that in Mr Bartholomew's new district -hewould find the relations between Bench and Bar as cordial as they had been in Central Otago. Mr Davey entirely endorsed Mr M'Neil's remarks. A magistrate could assist members of the Bar in a way in which the general public had no idea—especially cjuld he assist young counsel. The Government had seen tit to make many appointments from Oantral Otago and in this iustance it was by no means the least.
Mr Bartholomew said he was sorry bo sever his connection with Central Ooago. During the few mouths he hid presided over the courts of the listricts the relations between Bench and Bar had been extremely pleasant. Be had done his best to discharge his duties conscientiously. He appreciated the high opinion of the members of the Bar. If he had been of any assistance to them it was a great pleasure to him. He had had absolute confidence and trust in them. If he Jid not meet them again in his public capacity he hoped to do so in private life.
