The Public Trust Office.
It is only about once a year that the people hear anything of the Public Trust Office. When the annual report is presented to Parliament, a few papers comment on the figures, and a few members of Parliament may say a word or two complimentary to the institution. The Public Trust Office is of first importance to the people and a credit to the Colony, The integrity of the Public Trustee is guaranteed by the State—the office is fool-proof and rogue-proof. It is not a profit-earning institution, for aJJ that is required of it is that it shall be self-supporting. Notwithstanding that it performs numerous services without fee or award, the scale of charges has been further and materially reduced. Year by year the Office is finding greater scope for its energies, and the growth of business is very satisfactory. The capital value of the estates now in the hands of the Public Trustee is £1,467,614 as compared with £1,806,953 in 1896.
