Borough Council.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday evening last, when there were present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr Gv.o Spencer), Cr Sehaumann, Laidlaw, Ryan, M'Knight, Buchanan, and Gregg. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed with one dissentient vote, Cr Ryan protested against- the motion in which Mr Rivers was askei to discharge debris from Stockyard dam down Edwards Gully. The Council had no right to do so. Outward correspondence was read and approved. Inward correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : The statement of balances was read, showing a total debit balance at bank of £547 9s 7d.

—From Mr Wilmot, district surveyor, asking if the council erected the fence at the north-east portion of the Borough endowment. Cr Laidlaw explained that the land on Moutere run adjoining the fence was cut up for settlement, and that when taken up Mr Jopp was informed he would be allowed valuation for the fencing. The fence, he understood, was put up by the lessees of Moutere run, and the Borough had not paid for half of it. The fence therefore belonged to Mr Jopp. The Mayor said he could not ascertain that the Council had ever contributed to the cost of the 'fence. Resolved—That Mr Wilmot be informed that there is no record showing that the Council had ever paid anything towards the erection of the fence, —From the Paymaster-General, advising that the sum of £B2 12s 7d, subsidy on rates, had been remitted to the credit of the Borough. —From the Fire Brigade, asking that the charge for the hall at the Brigade's benefit concert held recently be remitted, as the Brigade was a Borough institution, On the motion of Or Sehaumann, seconded by Or Gregg, it was resolved that the charge be remitted. —From Ml- James Rivers, giving information concerning the cleaningout of the water^race. —From the Department of Agriculture, re destruction of small birds, requesting that the regulations be complied with. On the motion of Cr Gregg, seconded < by Cr Laidlaw, it was resolved that a sum of .£2/. Be voted for the purchase of effgs and heads of small birds. —From Mrs A E Ryan, asking the Council's permission to the granting of a residence area within the Borough. Cr Sehaumann moved, and Cr Gregg seconded—That no objection be of fered to the granting of the application.—Carried.

—Mr Druminey wrote, offering to do the paining, staining, and varnishing in connection with the town hall at Is 3d per square yard, —Mr W S -Edgecombe also wrote, offering to do the work at Is 3d per square yard. Resolved —That the matter stand over in the meantime. The inward correspondence was re- , ceived. Several councillors directed attention to the- nuisance caused by carts going over footpaths. Resolved—That the dayman be directed to take actien against offenders. O brought up the question of supplying the cemetery with water, and be thought something should be done in the matter. Or Gregg thought it would be cheaper to convey the water along the old race than to connect with the s mains. ... It was resolved on the motion of Cr Laidlaw, seconded by Cr Schaumann —That the Water Byelaws be handed over to the Borough Solicitor for final revision. Several councillors spoke regarding the nuisance caused to .reiMents in various parts of the town by* straying cattle.

It was resolved that the dayman's attention be anain called to to this matter, and that he take more energetic steps to abate the nuisance.
