WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

ASHBURTON DISTRICT MEETING -The December meeting of the Ashburton District Women’s Institute was held in the Community Centre on Tuesday. Mrs Fitzgerald (president) presided over a good attendance. Proceedings opened with the singing of the ode. The correspondence included an invitation from Willowby-Eiffelton members to attend their garden party on February 22. . ■ Members were asked to contact Mis Fitzgerald or the secretary about ,seats in the bus chartered for the institute’s picnic to Christchurch Gardens and Museum on January 23. As this was the Christmas meeting further business was dispensed with and the programme proceeded with. The choir, under the leadership of Mr L. G. Peach, adult education music tutor, rendered carols and part songs. The programme was as follows:“Dabbling in the Dew,” “Sigh No More, Ladies,”- “The Ride of the Witch,” three carols, and “Worship. Those taking part were: Mesdames W P Bryant, Craighead, W. V. Joyce, E. Loftus, J. Roffey, W. Sedcole, and Miss Watt. ■ln appreciation of their services flowers were presented''to Mrs Peach and Mrs Kiele, the accompanist, and to Mr Peach a buttonhole. Mr Peach, at the request of the president, gave an interesting account of his work. „ Following afternoon tea, hostessed by the committee members and Mrs R. Cairns (convener), the Drama Club entertained with their play “Scandalmongers,” the cast being Mesdames Roffey (producer), Cullimore, Donaldson, Leask, jnr., Gluyas, McQuarters and Reardon. Votes of thanks were passed to the performers by Mrs Fitzgerald, who also presented Mrs Roffey with flowers. The Christmas cake was cut by the vice-president (Mrs E. A. Amos) and Christmas greetings exchanged. An enjoyable meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. Competitions resulted: Bowl or mixed flowers, Miss Whearty 1, Mrs Joyce 2; posy, Mrs Joyce.l; best bloom, Mrs Gluyas 1; truss, Mrs Wright 1, Mrs Joyce 2, Mrs Gluyas 3, spongs roll, Mrs Gluyas 1.
