BOYS’ BRIGADE CAMP “CANVAS TOWN” Possibly the largest boys’ camp ever held in New Zealand will be held at Waipara (North Canterbury) from December 28 to January 8 when 1650 members of Boys’ Brigade companies from all parts of New Zealand and 32 from overseas will assemble for the Silver Jubilee Camp. A special train has been chartered to bring the North Island boys down to Wellington, from where they will travel on the Tamahine. Meals have been arranged en route. At the camp there will be at least 210 bell tents erected, and one of the major problems will be the feeding of campers. There will be five cooks on duty and meals will be cooked on six stoves. For the boy wno never gets enough to eat at any time a camp canteen will be erected. To enable boys to have money In camp to celebrate the festive season a camp hank is to be established. The Brigade authorities have been fortunate in securing the services of three Physical Welfare Department officers to assist in the planning and directing the recreation of the camp. There will be- games, sports of all kinds, swimming under strict supervision, hikes, trips to Christchurch, but one of the highlights of this section will be on December 28, when Jack Maybury of “Quiz Kids” fame will conduct an actual session with a team from those present. These will be broadcast at 7 p.m. on December 2.) and January 5 from all ZB stations,, in addition to a broadcast from 3ZB on Saturday, December 30. A commemorative leaflet has been drawn by the well-known designer of stamps, Mr James Berry, and this will be the only official permanent record the boys will have. The Ashburton and Methven Companies will be represented by 37 boys, the largest single unit to enter camp from the district.
