THE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS
MAYOR AND,, MAYORESS OF ASHBURTON TO PARTICIPATE The Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs E. C. Bathurst, will be the official representatives of Ashburton at the principal Canterbury Centennial festivities at the week-end. They will be present on Saturday at the re-enactment of the landing from the first four ships, which will be followed by divine service and a commemorative banquet. On Sunday Mr and Mrs Bathurst will attend the thanksgiving service at the Christchurch Cathedral. It is of interest to note that in the procession which precedes the service,, and which starts from the Carlton bridge, cars will be numbered and marked with the name of the district from which the various representatives come. Mr Bathurst’s car will be number 104 in the 150 taking part. On Monday the Mayor and Mayoress will occupy seats on the official stand , at the corner of Park Terrace and Salisbury Street, and will from there, view the Hundred Years of Progress procession. In the afternoon they will attend a garden party promoted by the Canterbury Pilgrims and Early Settlers’ Association at Deans’ Bush. Later they will be present at the dedication by the Prime Minister, Mr S. G. Holland, of the International airport at Harewood. • In the procession on Monday, the Ashburton Silver Band will also take part. On Tuesday afternoon the Ashburton visitors will be taken on an official flight by Qantas Empire Airways in the Constellation plane which is visiting Harewood for the airport opening, and in the evening they jvill be guests of Tasman Empire Airways at a cocktail party in celebration of the same event.
