SOUTH ISLAND POWER

UNITS DRAWN PROM STORAGE “VERY UNSATISFACTORY CONDITIONS” (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 20. In the South Island hydraulic conditions were again very unsatisfactory, and storage for nearly 3,000,000 units had to be drawn oh, said the general manai ger of the State Hydro-electric Department (Mr A. \E. Davenport), in his weekly report issued to-day. The overhaul of the Highbank generating machinery would be begun this week, and this would cause more stored water to be used if enough rain did not fall in the meantime. Mr Davenport added that the South Island last week was 3.85 per cent, above its allocation. ' The North Island exceeded its power allocation by 10 per cent. last week, said Mr Eavenport. “There was a further improvement in the storage at Lake Taupo, but so far no advantage has been derived from the present unsettled conditions.” The Mangahao dams were almost empty, and the level of Waikaremoana, in spite of the rainfall of 3.43 inches for the week, had fallen .2ft.
