CHILDREN’S APPEAL

NEARLY £IOOO COLLECTED The amount of contributions received by the treasurer (Mr G. C. Nicoll) during the Unicef appeal, at Ashburton was £993 17s 5d last evening, but many more collecting boxes have yet to be returned or counted. The total collected this week has been estimated at much more than £IOOO. The amount collected throughout the entire period of the last appeal was about £4OOO. The street day appeal, which was postponed yesterday because of the heavy fall of snow, will probably be held next Friday.

LOWCLIFFE EFFORT

SCHOOL RAISES OVER £3O .In spite of inclement' weather a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was spent by parents, friends and pupils of the Lowcliffe school on Thursday afternoon, when an afternoon of light entertainment was held to rai&e funds for the Appeal for Children. Games and competitions were held and over £3O was raised, an excellent effort for a school with a roll of not quite 50. The highlights of the afternoon were the hockey match between the girls and the mothers/and a football match between the boys and the fathers. It is reported that the mothers could not have been more dangerous had they been wielding swords and, amid slipping and sliding, began to bruise and blacken their off-spring. However, the school team fought back valiantly and the match ended in a draw 2 goals apiece. In true Southland style the two football teams were piped on to the field by Piper Scott, and then the battle started. The men bullied their way to the opposing line where McKay scored. However, Brandon O’Sullivan side-stepped in true Kyle fashion and equalled the scores. The men, more accustomed to holding round the neck, found difficulty in tackling low and David Patterson scored. By shear brute strength, the men scored again, but they found their breath coming in short pants, and School applied the pressure for O’Sullivan and Staples to score. Seeing that the men were obviously under a strain, the referee blew his whistle for full time, with the School winning by 12 points to 6. Speeches were made by Nita Wolfrey (hockey), Ivan Abbott (football) and Roger Murdoch (on behalf of the school). Mr D. M. Bruce thanked the children for their part. Much praise is due to Miss A. Paterson and Mr A. J. Brown (teachers) for their initiative in organising the function, very little attention by growers, children.
