EAST SCHOOL

MONTHLY MEETING OF COMMITTEE At the recent monthly meeting of the Ashburton East School committee, the headmaster, Mr J. E. Fraser, reported that the school roll was 469 with an average attendance of 93 per cent. As an end of term ceremony, the two school chorus, junior and senior, would give a short concert at the school on Thursday, August 17, when a collection would be taken up for Unicef. The Arbor Day ceremony had been held on August 3 when trees and shrubs had been planted according to the pre-arranged plan, with the senior boys preparing the holes for planting. Mrs Donn had resigned, and Miss Paterson would also leave at the end of the term. Miss C. Leadley would take her place as probationary assistant. The chairman, Mr A. M. Sutherland, reported on the recent visit to the school by the secretary-manager and foreman of the Canterbury Education Board, when the question of shifting the special classroom to the new school site was discussed. Messrs L. McNally and H. G. Paterson were appointed visiting committee for the month. There were present Messrs Sutherland, Paterson, McNally, J. Twamley, T. D. Childs, J. F. Rodger, J. J. Dickinson, H. T. Hickman, J. G. Kirk and the headmaster.
