ANNUAL MEETING OF SHAREHOLDERS The annual meeting of shareholders of the Methven Town Hall Co., was presided over by Mr James Carr. There was only a small attendance. The chairman's report showed that during the past year a considerable amount had been spent on the hall, including a new floor in the main hall and the painting of the kitchen, supper-room and lounge. This cost in the vicinity of £3OO. Since then a further £IOO had been spent in installing fluorescent lighting throughout the building. The balance-sheet showed a loss of £234 on the year’s working. During the year tenders had been called for painting the outside of the building, but none had been received. It was decided to have the hall seats re-upholstered, and this work will be put in hand almost immediately at a cost of about £l3O. Other repairs to the hall will be put in hand as soon as labour is available. As the policy of the company is to spend all profits on the hall, no dividend has ever been received by the shareholders. Appeal for Children At the request of the Ashburton County Council, members of the Methven Women’s Division of Federated Farmers, with the Methven Citizens’ Committee, met to discuss the collection of donations for the Methven, Springfield, Highbank area for the Unicef appeal. The following were appointed: President, Mr Jas. Carr; chairman, Mr H. G. Ayers; committee, Messrs G. Callaghan, J. F. Stone, G. Chapman-Cohen, Mesdames A. W. Wilson, C. L. Vaughan, J. Wootton and Miss Carr; secretary, Mr C. W. Talbot; treasurer, Mr G. W. Thomson. Areas were allotted to the various organisations, and it was decided to carry out a canvass of all residents at an early date. The August meeting of the Highbank branch of the Red Cross Society was presided over by Mrs E. A. Bland. There was an excellent attendance. Regret was expressed at the death of Mr G. Currie, who had acted as hon. auditor for many years, members standing in silence. One new member was welcomed. It was decided to continue sending the monthly food parcels overseas. Many letters of thanks and appreciation from former recipients were read. It was also decided to forward £5 to the Children’s Emergency Fund. A well-laden market table, under the supervision of Mesdames T. Gilpin and F. Woods, realised £3 2s lOd. Donations were received from Mesdames G. Callaghan and J. W. Thomas. It was decided to hold a clothes drive for displaced persons, Mrs R. Johnston offering her home as a depot. This drive will close on August 23. A parcel of children’s hand-knitted vests was handed to the sub-branch from the Highbank Women’s Institute. The next meeting was arranged for November. At the close of the meeting afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames E. J. Bland and R. Hartley and Misses D. Thomas, V. Weily and G. Johnston.
