LOCAL AND GENERAL

Ashburton Rotary Mr J. Stockman was the speaker at to-day's Rotary Club luncheon in Ashburton. His subject was the “Rotarian,” the New Zealand Rotary movement journal, Mr Stockman dealt interestingly with the journal’s purpose and features.

Bewitched Audience The visit of Mr John V. Trevor to Ashburton should constitute an event of 'outstanding interest to playgoers. Reports of his presentation yesterday in Timaru are glowing. Remarking that “the excellence of character por : trayal depends largely on the actor’s ability to bewitch the audience,” the report continues: “Mr Trevor accomplishes this instantly.” Mr Trevor presented “The Merchant of Venice" to secondary school pupils in Ashburton . this afternoon, and this evening presents Patrick Hamilton’s highly-dramatic play “Rope.”

Corner Hedges Position Some confusion regarding the position of the 17 residents, on whom orders to cut back or lower corner hedges were served some time ago, had arisen as a result of the decision by the Borough Council on Monday evening, stated the Mayor (Mr E. C. Bathurst) to-day. It was then resolved to make an inspection, after which 14 days would be allowed the residents to comply with the order. That inspection, said Mr Bathurst, would not affect the liability of the owners to cut back, the hedges, and was merely to be carried out in order to see whether the residents had taken any steps in compliance with the order.

R.S.At Views on Immigration The setting up of a Parliamentary committee on immigration was urged on the Government by a resolution passed by the annual conference of the Dominion council of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association in Wellington last evening. The conference suggested that the committee should deal with the immediate issues of immigration, and formulate longterm plans. The conference also decided that, the Government should be asked to obtain more immigrants from the United Kingdom, and establish bureaux .in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Eire to this end. A motion that the Government should set up a Royal commission on immigration was rejected by the conference a® “a waste of time and a waste of money.”—P.A.

Geffin to the Fore The value of an accurate goalkicker in a Rugby team was truly illustrated in the first Currie Rugby match played at the famous Ellis Park, Johannesburg, recently, when Transvaal narrowly defeated Eastern Province by 17 points to 15. Most points were scored by Gordon Jordann, the Eastern Province fly-half, who scored all his team’s points, kicking three dropped goals and two penalties. However, it was the now wellknown “Okey" Geffin who snatched victory for Transvaal right on time by converting a try from the sideline, fie also kicked three penalties and potted a goal, constituting the rest of Transvaal’s points. Therefore only three of the 32 points scored during the match were the result of team play.
