TOBACCO CROPS DAMAGED
HEAVY FROSTS IN NELSON (P A.) NELSON, March 14. Where Monday morning’s frost struck Nelson’s tobacco growing areas, loss will he heavy. As much as nine degrees' of frost was recorded in places, and this is fatal to tobacco leaf in the middle ■ of harvesting. What had been brought into the hints is safe, hut much of the rest is worthless now. , ; . The proportion of the crop lost varies, but some growers estimate from' a third to a half, and one or two the whole crop. Growers are covered by their own insurance fund against hail, flood ,and frost damage. In each ward there are tobacco assessors, but no claims will be paid until the buying season is completedMost farmers dp not depend on tobacco ’alone for their year’s crop return, but for some it is the major part of their annual, income.
