LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 15, 1900]. Tennis —In spite of a high wind, an interesting tennis match was played on Thursday between teams representing the Trevolfton and Baring Square Tennis Clubs. The game was played on the Baring Square ground, and the suburban team won by one game, the points being 285-255. In the evening a social was held, vocal and instrumental items being contributed by the following: Misses Steel, Jones, Parsons, Lilly (Christchurch), Mrs ifflskens, Messrs McClymont, . and Tucker (Christchurch). Fairfield Freezing Works: Every inch of space in these works is now engaged up till March 23. Mr F. Waymouth visited the works; and Ashburton on Saturday, and expressed himself as very pleased with the progress being made. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 15, 1925). Interruptions at Coleridge—Fierce winds caused several interruptions in the supply of the Coleridge power today in Ashburton. The first break came at noon, and there were several in rapid succession, each lasting about one minute. The Ashburton Power Board’s stand-by plant was brought into operation at 12.30 o’clock, and supplied the deficiency. The damage to the Coleridge' line was beyond Methven, probably in the Rakaia Gorge. Westinghouse Brakes: “It cost the country over £25 in damages when the Westinghouse brake is used to stop a train suddenly,” said the Magistrate (Mr E. D. Mosley) in the Ashburton Court this morning, when impressing on a man the seriousness of driving a vehicle in front of a train.
