Ashburton Side School —At a meeting of the Ashburton School Committee held last night, Miss Mary Burr was elected to the position of mistress of the side school, Allenton. Miss Burr, whose testimonials were of a very high order, has for the past nine years been assistant mistress at the Gloucester Street School, Christchurch. —Wakanui River Board: At the quarterly- meeting of this board there were , present:—Messrs E. Thomas, F. Amos, J. Brown, and S. Brown. Mr S. Brown was unanimously elected chairman.

Formation of Fire Brigade—Since the installation of the high-pressure water supply for Methven a proposal has been on foot to form a Volunteer Fire Brigade. Mr G. Nicholls, formerly of the Ashburton Fire Brigade, is very enthusiastic in support of the proposal, and is working hard to establish’a scheme. —Court at Exhibition: To further the scheme for proposed Ashburton, or Canterbury, Court at the Dunedin Exhibition in November, the Ashburton Chamber of Commferce is negotiating for a meeting of representatives of the Borough and County Councils, the Chamber of Commerce and members of the Canterbury Committee, to be held in Ashburton next week. At this meeting it is hoped that Christchurch people will have some definite information regarding costs to lay before local bodies.
