AUSTRALIA’S DEFENCE RIGHTS (Rec. 10 a.m.) CANBERRA, Mar. 12. Australia had positive rights to defend mandated New Guinea, the deputy-leader of the Opposition, Dr. H. V. Evatt, said in a broadcast. He declared that under fthe trust agreement for New Guinea, drawn up by the United. Nations, there were no limitations to defence of territory by the Australian Government, either alone or in conjunction with Britain, the United States or any Allied force Papua was now an integral, part of Australian territory. Dutch New Guinea was completely under the sovereignty of the Netherlands and Australia had no legal interest in it. Any proposed change in the status of that territory, however, would he a matter of international concern and of interest to Australia as a member of the United Nations.
