SEVERE FROST OF 7.2 DEGREES Following 93 points of rain on Saturday and 10 points yesterday, Ashburton awoke this morning to a sharp frost of 7.2 degrees, which caused severe damage to all gardens. However, although the frost was unexpected, recordings show that at a similar period last year, a frost of slightly less severity was experienced. Throughout the morning the _ atmosphere had a decided nip, and it was not until 1 o’clock that temperatures increased, although the sun shone brightly. Saturday’s minimum temperature of 49.0 degrees is the lowest for March, and also the lowest for the month for several years. Other recordings taken at 9 o this morning, with those for the previous 24-hour period in parentheses, were: —Maximum temperature 51.8 (49 0) degrees, minimum 31.5 (35.5) degrees, earth 50.5 (52.9) .degrees, barometer 29.85 (29.71) inches. There was no sunshine registered yesterday.
