VON LUCKNER’S SURRENDER

PIRACY TO FIGHT IN CIVILIAN CLOTHES NEW YORK, March 9. Count von Luckner said to-day that he surrendered to the New Zealand policeman, Inspector Harry Clifton Hills, because to fight in civilian clothes ivould have been an act of piracy. Inspector Hills died last Sunday, i Count von Luckner, who paid a tribute to Inspector Hill’s bravery, said that after the Seeadler was wrecked in the Society Islands he and six men in a lifeboat which contained a plentiful supply of arms reached the island of Wakaya. He was planning to capture a sloop in the harbour when a steamship put him off. Count von Luckner added that he thought he would capture both the sloop and steamship, until he realised that he was in civilian clothes and decided that he would lose his honour if he fought.
