FIFTH TEST

AUSTRALIA FOUR FOR 380. (Roc. 10.15) CAPETOWN, March 3. Australia, with four wickes for 380 at stumps on the first day of the fifth Test at Port Elizabeth to-day, appeared to be at least safe from defeat. _ • South Africa snatched an early advantage by dismissing Moroney and Miller with only 49 runs on the board, but in a smashing left-handed partnership, Morris and Harvey soon turned the wicket-takers into run fodder. Harvey was the more enterprising of the pajr. He raced to a brilliant 116 in just under 2i hours. Harvey hit 14 fours and, in 130 minutes, he and Morris put on 187 runs. With* eight first-class centuries, the young Victorian has equalled Denis Compton’s record for a South African season. More sedate but driving powerfully, Morris was dismissed late in the afternoon after a masterly 157, with 15 fours and one six in 301 minutes. This was Morris’s seventh first-class century of the tour. His fourth wicket partnership with Hassett .was worth 114 runs. Hassett, exploiting anything loose and placing his shots cleverly, was undefeated for 68 at stumps. J Melle, the 19-year-old bowler, was the most successful in the limited attack.
