WARM AND NOR’-WESTRY

The weather in Ashburton to-day was warm, and till a north-wester sprang up about noon, very pleasant. Readings taken at the Domain weather station at 9 o’clock th'is morning, and referring to the previous 24-hour period, were as follow (yesterday’s corresponding readings in parentheses) : Maximum temperature 73 (69), minimum 44.2 (53.8), earth 62.1 (64.1); barometer 29.46 inches (29.56). No bright sunshine was recorded, against 9.9 hours for Monday. REVIEW OF PAST YEAR The outstanding feature of the weather in Ashburton county for 1949 was the abnormal dryness of the spring months. For the first three months of the year rainfall was light, and temperatures generally high, the hottest day for 28 years being February (i (95.4 degrees) followed by 94 on the succeeding day. January’s hottest day was the 23rd (88.4 degrees). The total fall for the year was 28.2 inches, the heaviest in any one month being that of December (5.69 inches). August was the month of most numerous frosts, 25 being recorded, including the heaviest of the year, 15.7 degrees on the 3rd. February had the highest total sunshine record, over 11 hours being recorded on nine occasions. The longest period of sunshine on any one day was however, 12.7 hours on December 27. The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather: — A weak ridge of high pressure is north of the North Island, but pressures are low south of the South Island. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru to 6 p.m. to-morrow is as follows: — Moderate south-west winds and some showers at first. Fair and cool to-morrow, with variable winds. Further outlook: Fair.
