TINCTURE OF OPIUM

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 11. Five charges of committing breaches of regulations concerning the drug tincture of opium ' were preferred against a firm of Wellington chemists, J. R. Cunningham, Ltd., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Pleas'of guilty were entered to all charges.
The Magistrate (Mr J. Hessel) after hearing submissions, adjourned the -fixing of a penalty to enable further written submissions to be made.
Mr W. R. Birks, who prosecuted, said charges had been laid not because of any illicit intention on the part of defendant, but because his offence had opened the way for improper use of the drug. The offences, he said, appeared to have been caused by muddle more than any illicit intents. Investigations had shown that in three years 5611 bof opium handled by defehdant could not be traced. Defendant had failed to make entries of sales of the drug, had made false entries, and had failed in other directions to comply with the regulations. < Counsel for defendent. said there was no question of defendant ..selling the drug to addicts. Defendant had used it in a cough mixture.
