OPENING OF HOLY YEAR
BROADCAST BY POPE
(N.Z.P. A.—Copyright) LONDON, Nov. 11
Reuter’s Vatican City correspondent says that Pope Pius will officially proclaim the opening of the Holy Year in 1950 in a message broadcast on the morning of December 24 to 425,000,000 Roman Catholics throughout the world. Never before has a Pope opened a Holy Year through the medium of the radio. The Pope’s message is expected to urge the nations of the world to peace and harmony, and. to enjoin Roman Catholics to pray for the intentions of the Holy Year. After he has broadcast his message the Pope will be carried on his crimson throne to the threshold of St. Peter’s, where he will strike three times with a silver hammer upon the Holy Door of the Basilica. The masonry which has blqcked the door for 16 years—since the'last Holy Year in 1933 —will be rolled aside, and the Pope will move into che great church.
