DEFENCE OF BRITAIN

ATOM BOMS FACTOR

STRONG STAND URGED (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright), (Rec. 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 11. Russia’s possession of the atom bomb was being taken into account in the current review of Britain’s defence forces, Mr Michael Stewart, Under-Secretary of State at the War Office, told the House of Commons to-day.

Anwsering a short debate in Britain’s defence costs, Mr Stewart said that, while Britain was spending about eight per cent, of her total national income on defence, the Soviet Union was spending probably 15 per cent. Mr Stewart added: “In the cold war, Britain has to face one awkward situation after another, at points dotted all round the globe. I hope that, if we can. make it clear we can meet a situation of this kind, and neither be cajoled nor browbeaten out of facing those responsibilities, we will greatly reduce the chance of a more serious conflict arising.’’
