PARAGUAY ELECTION
PROMISE GIVEN BY PRESIDENT
ASUNCION (Paraguay), Nov. 10. *
President Chavez announced to-day that a presidential election will be held on July 16, 1950. It will b,e the first popular election in Paraguay since April 20, 1939, when General Estigarribia was elected. General Estigarribia died in an aeroplane accident in 1940, and General Higinio Mprinigo was appointed provisional President. He ruled with a strong hand until ousted in June, 1948, after five months of civil war. There have been five presidents during the last year. All came into power through coups d’etat. President Chavez, who won the office last September, said that he intended to restore full constitutional rule.
