WITHDRAWAL REFUSED
MR LANGSTONE TO STAND
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Nov. 11, Overtures have been made to Mr F. Langstone, Independent Labourcandidate for Roskill, to withdraw from the election, but he said to-day that he would not. Three weeks ago the executive, of the Auckland Trades Council wrote to Mr Langstone saying it wished to meet him to discuss an important matter. He asked an executive official if it related to the election.
Mr Langstone’s reply was that he considered the Labour Representation Committee the proper body to ; make such an approach, though he did not deny the Trades Council its right to interest itself in the matter. He said he was not splitting the vote in Roskill. He was standing on the same principles as at the 1946 election. Attempts by individuals to contact Mr Langstone for conversations have since been unsuccessful.
Mr Langstone said to-dav that his selection as an Independent Labour candidate was unanimously endorsed. He was also petitioned by 500 electors to stand. He did 4iot think the Roskill electors had much to say-in the selection of the official Labour Candidate. The executive of the Trades Council is meeting to discuss the situation.
