Minor Fires in Ashburton

BRIGADE KEPT BUSY

Between'- 3.30 yesterday afternoon and 9 o’clock this morning, the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade received four calls on its services, but in each instance the outbreak was of a minor nature. There was an earlier call on Tuesday night.

The first call yesterday was to a fire in the fence dividing the properties of Leonard Horton and David Samuel Alexander, Kermodc . .Street. About half a chain of this fence and also part of the fence fronting on the street were ablaze, hut the outbreak was extinguished before much damage was caused. About 5.30 pan. yesterday, a call was received to a chimney fire at Mr E. W. Wade’s residence, 120 Havelock Street, while, three hours later, there was a similar call to the home of Mr Arthur Knight, 157 Tancrcd Stroct. No damage was caused in either of these eases, a. bucket pump being sufficient to deal with the trouble. Just before 9 o’clock this morning, the brigade was called to the shop of Buxton and Thomas, in the Triangle. While paintwork was being burned off the facade above the verandah, one of the boards (might alight and there was danger of the flame spreading. This outbreak, too, was dealt with by the brigade before any damage was caused.

A chimney fire occurred at thc*home of Mr .1. H. Anthony, 122 Alford Forest Road, at 7.15 on Tuesday night. Again there was no damage.
