FIRE IN HOLD f i (Rec. 10.55 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 24. With fire in one of her holds, coalgas escaping from her cargo and two of her hatches blown off, the London freighter Avismoat hove to in a southerly gale in the Indian Ocean to-day to wait for help. The British freighter Raranga in racing through high seas to her assistance. Brief radio messages have been received from the Avismoat. The -first, picked up three days ago, said the vessel, which was bound from Hull to Fremantle, had a fire in one of her holds and was making for Fremantle. A message last night described a worsening of her plight, and asked for aid. The latest message said: “Speed nine knots. Running before southerly gale. Number four and > five hatch covers blown off and serious goal-gas escaping from cargo. Any ship in vicinity and any shipping coming towards us please indicate position..” The Avismoat was about 1000 miles west of Fremantle. The Raranga, on a voyage from Durban to Fremantle, signalled that she was 100 miles east of the Avisipoat and was going to her aid.
