GIRLS’ LIFE BRIGADE
MISSIONARY EVENING On August 19, the Fourth Ashburton Company of the Girls’ Life Brigade held .a missionary evening to celebrate the 21st birthday of the Brigade movement in New Zealand. A bring and buy was held, which resulted in £34 17s lOd being raised toward the P.W.M.U. mission funds. A short programme began with the singing of the Brigade hymn. This was followed by an alphabet on China and a short play on India, both being the work of an ex-brigader. A birthday cake, made by the secretary and iced by Trevor Mcllroy, of the Boys’ Brigade, was decorated with the crest and various brigade badges, and finished with 21 candles. These were lit by Mrs I. Ross, the first-lieutenant of the company, after which the cadets Gang “Jesus Bids Us Shine.” The candles were then blown out by Rosemary Jessep, the smallest cadet present, and the cake was cut by Warrant Officer M. Johnston. The showing of a film on the New Hebrides, and the singing of a missionary hymn were included in the vesper period, conducted by the chaplain, the Rev. D. M. Steedman, and brought to a close a very pleasant evening.
