UNO BUDGET FOR NEXT YEAR
Mr Lie Proposes Increase NEW YORK, August 21. The Secretary-General of the United Nations (Mr Trygve Lie) to-night proposed an expanded budget of 44,314,398 dollars for 1950. This estimate is 827,270 dollars higher than the budget approved for 1949. It will come before the General Assembly next month. Mr Lie’s budget was strongly criticised by the standing committee of budgetary experts, which operates independently of the Secretariat. The committee recommended a cut of 1,786,750 dollars, and said that it noted “a persistent and dangerous trend” by which some highly placed members of Mr Lie’s staff were building over-sized self-contained administrative machines round themselves. The committee added that the need for streamlining was important because of the increasing currency difficulties of United Nations members.
