HELPED BY NEIGHBOUR

INVALID RESCUED FROM FIRE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 21. A partly crippled woman was rescued by a woman neighbour from a blazing house at Newtown last evening. Taken from her bedroom, which wan ablaze, into the temporary safety of the hall, a virtual invalid, Mrs J. Mexted, aged about 70, was later halfdragged and half carried outside by her middle-aged neighbour, Mrs E. A. Ferguson. The rescued woman was burnt on both legs and suffered shock. The Wellington Hospital reported her condition last evening to be satisfactory. Fire broke out in Mrs Mexted’s bedroom about 10.20 p.m. Her son carried her into the hall which was then safe, while he went next door to telephone the brigade. Meanwhile the flames had spread to the hall and other parts of the house. Mrs Ferguson, to whose house the son had gone, rushed through the flames and got Mrs Mexted to the veranda.
