TELEGRAPHING OF BETS

Authority Expected Soon (P.A.) MASTERTpN, August 18. It would take at least three years to bring into operation a major scheme for off-course betting and as a temporary measure it would shortly be possible for people to telegraph money to racecourse secretaries for investment on the totalisator, said the president of the Masterton Racing Club (Mr J. A. Betts) at the annual meeting of the club last evening. When the major scheme of the New Zealand Racing and Trotting Conferences was instituted the outcome should be a great increase in totalisator turnovers. In the meantime, Mr Betts said, the wiring of money to the course was going to be an added worry for secretaries.
