QUARTER OF STAFF TO BE SACKED
BRITISH ENGINEERING FIRM LONDON, August IS. Following the statement by _ the Federation of British Industries giving a warning of imminent mass unemployment in British engineering trades, one of the bggest Midlands steel firms, John Carrington and Sons, of Broomsgrove, Worcestershire, announced that it will sack 557 of its men—nearly a quarter of its payroll because of redundancy. Carrington’s since the war produced one-quarter of Britain’s steel forgings. Orders for steel forgings dropped because fewer tractors are being exported.
