WAR IN CHINA

THREAT TO KUNMING Allied Nationals to Evacuate (N.Z.P. A.—Copyright). (Rec.ll.o) HONG KONG, August 18. The British and American Con-sulates-General in Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan, have advised their nationals to evacuate Kunming immediately in view of the war situation, says the Nationalist Central News Agency. Most officials of the two consulates and their dependents will also be evacuated. The United States has closed its consular office in the strategically important Tihua, capital of Sinkiang Province, in China’s far north-west. Consul J. Hall Paxton and 15 members of his staff left by motor caravan for south Kiang, whence they will make their way over the Himalayas. The vice-consul is remaining to protect consular property. Tihua,' which is 2000 miles northwest of Hong Kong, has long been regarded as the Western listening post for activities in adjoining Soviet Turkestan. A Hong Kong Government official said to-day that so far as was known, the British Consulate in Tihua was remaining open.
