CHILEAN RIOTS

SANTIAGO STUDENTS DEMONSTRATE SANTIAGO (Chile), Aug. 17. A disagreement over a half-cent increase in bus fares has caused rioting in Santiago and the loss of seven lives. The Chilean Congress to-day held an emergency session, and the Government alleged that Communists had caused the rioting. The Senate early to-day approved a request from the President (Mr Gonzalez Videla) for extraordinary powers to cope with the situation. The Cabinet also asked for press and radio censorship to counter a “revolutionary” plot. Members of the University Students’ Federation have defied Government orders to return to their classes to-morrow. They have proclaimed a students’ strike. Troops and police used tear gas and firearms to-day to disperse students who were overturning and stoning buses. To-day was the second day of the riots, and three persons were killed and 21 injured, four of them seriously. Shops in Santiago have been closed.
