GUIDED MISSILES
GREAT ADVANCE MADE NEW YORK, April 14. Guided missiles launched from aeroplanes had reached such a stage ; of development that they could be used to intercept a bombing raid on any American city, mid General Joseph McNarney, Chief of the United States Air Materiel Command, to-night. “Having electronically detected the approach of enemy formations-, the Air Force would first dispatch high-speed interceptors,” he said. “Instead of carrying conventional guns, these aircraft would carry missiles which could be launched under their own rocket power at supersonic speeds to a target several miles away. “By means of radar homing devices, the missiles would track down the enemy, even in evasive action, and by means of proximity fuses they would be detonated when within lethal range of the enemy.” ; l: H, 1,_ *'' :
