MAUNDY MONEY
PRINCESS ELIZABETH PRESIDES
LONDON, April 14. Carrying the traditional nosegay of sweet herbs to guard against infection, Princess Elizabeth took his Majesty’s place at the Westminster Abbey Maunday Thursday ceremonies which, from ancient times, have been marked by the Sovereign giving gifts to the poor. The Princess watched a Yeoman of the Guard in Tudor uniform walk through the crowded nave bearing on his head a great silver dish from which the Lord High Almoner, the Bishop of Lichfield, distributed pence in silver—as many pence as the King is years old—to 54 men and 54 women.
