DESERTERS FROM SHIPS
TWO PLACED ON PROBATION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Two ship deserters Avere dealt Avitlr in the Magistrates’ Court to-day by Mr A. M. Colliding, S.M., under tire Shipping and Seamen’s Amendment Act passed last session of Parliament. “I am not sure that it Avould rrot be better to place this man on probation,” said Mr Colliding in respect to Roland Clive Marzetti, a seaman, aged 20, Avho pleaded guilty to having deserted from the Port Lincoln in Auckland on November 22. “This man avi 11 then fall into a pool and you can call on him from there to place lrirrr on a ship sailing from New Zealand. If he is sentenced to imprisonment, after his term he is then free and no one knoAvs where he is.. As the ugav legislation contemplates a pool it is better to place them on probation.” Accused Avas placed on probation l’or 12 months and ordered to accept work approved by the Probation Officer.
Joseph Henry Beckett, a metal worker, aged 21, Avlro pleaded guilty to having deserted from the Derrycunilry on December 24, Avas also placed on probation for 12 months. “You are liable to be sent back to England,” said Mr Colliding.
