TRADE TALKS

Australia and New Zealand

“BIG BOOST EXPECTED”

(N.Z.P. A.—Copyright) CANBERRA, Jan. 12

It is learned authoritatively that a big boost for trade between Australia and New Zealand can be expected after a conference between trade experts from the two Dominions, to be held in New Zealand towards the end oil February or early in March.

The conference will have before it earlier New Zealand proposals for Australia to supply certain goods, mainly iron and steel, in exchange for softwoods and paper pulp. It is hoped that a firm agreement will be reached, not only on the types and quantities of goods to be exchanged, but also on the prices. The Australian delegation will comprise representatives of departments dealing with industrial development, commerce, customs, forestry, and timber.

The talks will he a direct outcome of discussions between the Federal Prime Minister (Mr Ghifley) and the New Zealand Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) last year, after the appreciation of the New Zealand £ to parity with sterling. The Australain Government is anxious to clear up any remaining doubts that this move wiil not result in a loss of trade to Australia or eliminate the favourable Australian trade balance with her sister Dominion.

Mt Fraser has indicated that he believes there should be a tendency for purchase by both countries to. increase. Apart from iron and steel, Australian products which have found a ready market in New Zealand include sugar, fresh and dried fruits, other foodstuffs, textiles, builders’ hardware, machines and leather.
