SECRET BALLOT

VICTORIAN ACT MAY RE WITHDRAWN , (Rec. 12.45.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The Premier of Victoria (Mr T. Hollway) promised the withdrawal of the Essential Services Act as soon as the moderates won back control of their unions from the militants.

Mr Hollway said: “That they are already doing this can be seen from the recent results of the Federal Tramways Union election. The Essential Services Act is a shield, not a sword; and we will keep it that way for a while.”

The Act provides that workers in essential industries must hold a secret ballot before striking.
